Right now it is no secret that we are forced to be living a lifestyle that can feel like we are more alone than we have ever been. This is obviously plaguing our social lives right now but if you are like me, you are feeling the affects in our fitness lives. Troy is totally here for you. Troy has provided access to the SugarWod, pause and go videos, equipment, and live zoom classes. And as important as it is right now to maintain being active and working out, the point of this blog is to hopefully encourage you to take more zoom classes and be more of an active participant in what is happening at Troy rather than only utilizing the program, equipment, or pause and go videos.

“The communal benefits of coming together with friends and colleagues, and doing something difficult, while encouraging one another, pays dividends beyond exercising alone,” says lead researcher Dayna Yorks.

Let me start by saying that we are so so happy if you are utilizing the pause and go videos, or just using SugarWod to see the workout and decide whether you want to do the workout or not. We provide these options in the hopes that you use them should the zoom classes not be an option that you can or want to use. However, studies show that there are many benefits to exercising with others as opposed to exercising by yourself! Lets break down what some of the benefits are and how it applies to Troy Crossfit.

  • We get to see you!!

We miss you all so much and love to see you bright and shining faces. Troy is not just a gym or a facebook page, it is a family. We do not just hope that you stay healthy in this season without any contact. Your coaching staff misses and enjoys the little bits of interaction we get with you every single day. Seeing our members over zoom get to place a sense of normalcy in our lives in a time when nothing seems normal. Hopefully this is the case for you as well!

  • Accountability

“In fact, peer support can be a great motivator, and can almost feel like group therapy.”

When we workout with friends and with others we have a sense of responsibility to keep showing up. Friends encourage each other and can make the notion of working out more enticing. Its not just suffering for fitness but now its suffering together. Its becoming less about the pain of the workout and more about the beauty of finishing the the rush of endorphins when you do complete it. I would also say that doing a workout with others is more enjoyable because you know that there is someone who is experiencing the same thing you are at the same time. You get to see them and that can drive you to do even better or just show up again!

  • Decreased stress?!

Studies actually show that people who workout out in a class or group setting experience lower amounts of  stress compared to those who workout alone. There are many guesses as to why this happes but we know that socializing also helps our bodies regulate cortisol, the stress hormone, as well as working out. Some Scientists believe that when we workout in groups we get the benefit of socializing AND working out. This seems obvious but when you add that to the benefits of accountability and being more consistent in your workouts, then you see that there are big benefits to those who workout in groups.

There are many other benefits, but for sake of keeping this short I’ll post some references below. 

I just want to leave you with this…..

This is NOT to pressure you into doing zoom when you aren’t comfortable with it and this is NOT to say that working out alone with the pause and go videos are not going to be SUPER beneficial. This is just to say that there are real benefits to working out with others and you are part of a family that wants to see you and hear you and be connected with you. So please consider joining us for a zoom WOD or a specialty class. I can honestly say that I have NEVER regretted getting on zoom and working out with my friends.
